Food Contact Packaging Brief

Overview

A useful food-contact brief identifies the food, the contact layer and the actual use conditions.

Contact

Identify which layer touches the food and mark each component's contact role. An outer gift carton around a sealed pouch serves a different role from an unlined paper wrapper touching food directly.

Conditions

Describe the food, contact time, temperature and oil or moisture exposure. Include filling, storage and intended consumer use. These inputs help determine which material and documentation questions need to be answered for the destination market.

Documentation

Match any supplied document to the exact grade, component or finished item and stated conditions. A generic company certificate does not answer all food-contact questions. Confirm the relevant evidence with the supplier before using the packaging for the intended application.

Describe the actual contact, not just food-safe

A dry biscuit at room temperature and a hot, oily item represent different contact briefs. State the food, contact time, temperature and the side touching the food, then identify the destination market for the required review.

Contact conditions and documentation

Check What to do Why it matters
Contact Name the food and the touching surface. Include windows, coatings or adhesives where relevant.
Conditions State temperature, time and storage. A material statement needs a matching use.
Documents Identify material and manufacturer scope. A document for another construction may not apply.

Record the actual product, material or file version used for the comparison. Identify what remains undecided and which sample or document can resolve it.

Discuss food-contact brief checklist

Email the food, proposed packaging and available specifications, with the relevant sample or file and the contact question to resolve.

Food Contact Packaging Brief FAQ

Review what it actually covers, including the material and intended conditions. The FDA’s food-contact guidance also distinguishes food types and use conditions; it is not a certification of this website’s products.

State the food, contact surface, time, temperature and oil or moisture exposure. Include filling, storage, consumer use and destination market so the material and documentation review addresses the actual application.

Do not assume it applies. Match the document to the exact grade, component or finished item and its stated conditions. Review relevant windows, coatings and adhesives as part of the intended construction.
