Paperboard GSM vs Thickness

Overview

Paper weight and thickness describe different material properties and should be recorded separately.

Weight

GSM measures mass per unit area; thickness measures the distance between the sheet's two faces. List both in the quotation rather than assuming one from the other.

Thickness

The actual grade is needed when reviewing folds, seams and clearances. Substituting a material with the same GSM does not automatically preserve thickness or the way a carton closes. Compare the changed board on the intended structure.

Fit

A practical specification lists grade, GSM and thickness separately, together with the agreed measurement basis where relevant. Keep the sample reference as part of the approval. If the material changes for a reorder, recheck fit and finishing instead of approving on weight alone.

Keep mass and caliper in separate fields

A procurement sheet should have one field for paper mass per area and another for thickness. Even if two papers show the same GSM, do not copy the thickness or crease setting from one to the other without checking the actual grade.

Record GSM and caliper separately

Check What to do Why it matters
GSM Record mass per unit area. Useful for identifying paper weight.
Caliper Record thickness and units. Affects fit, folding and wrapped dimensions.
Grade Record the selected stock reference. Connects the numbers to an identifiable material.

Record the actual product, material or file version used for the comparison. Identify what remains undecided and which sample or document can resolve it.

Discuss weight, thickness and fit checks

Email the product, proposed pack and paperboard specification, with a sample or file showing the thickness or fit question.

Paperboard GSM vs Thickness FAQ

The complete wrapped thickness and converting result can change. Recheck the assembled lid or drawer when the material specification changes.

No. GSM and thickness describe different properties. Record the actual grade, GSM and thickness separately, with the agreed measurement basis where relevant; equal GSM does not automatically mean equal thickness.

Check the new grade's thickness, folds, seams, closure fit and finishing on the intended structure. Retain the sample reference and do not copy crease settings or approve a reorder on paper weight alone.
